WHAT IS PILATES?
Joseph Pilates (1881-1967) developed the Pilates method of conditioning. He originally worked with dancers and other high level athletes in New York City. This method has been practiced for decades and has recently gained new enthusiasm in the fitness industry among those who are looking for a safe, well-rounded training technique.
Pilates is an alternative form of exercise that is designed to strengthen, stretch, and define all muscle groups as they are worked. It focuses on body alignment while minimizing stress placed on joints. Pilates is a mind/body approach to fitness that enhances one's awareness of proper body mechanics.
The main focus in Pilates work is "the powerhouse" which consists of the core muscles; abdominals, hips, buttocks, and lower back muscles. Having a strong core helps avoid injuries by providing a stable foundation to move from. Pilates is different than using weight machines because it works the core and whole limb using springs and pulleys for resistance. This creates longer, leaner, more flexible muscles.
PILATES AND PHYSICAL THERAPY
At Sport and Spine we have been extremely successful in combining the physical therapy treatments with sessions focusing on the Pilates method of training the body. As your physical therapist does manual therapy to correct the dysfunction in your spine and other areas of the body, it is imperative to develop the ability for the muscles to stabilize the body in this new, corrected alignment.
With Pilates-based exercises we have been able to retrain weak and under functioning muscles to do the job of stabilizing as they are normally supposed to do. We also increase flexibility in the spine, shoulders and hips in order to provide strong and proper postural alignment. This will allow you to function throughout the day without experiencing pain and fatigue of postural muscles.
We will concentrate on strengthening the core musculature or "powerhouse," as Joseph Pilates called it. This includes abdominal, hip, buttock and back extensor muscles. As a byproduct, you will also strengthen and tone your arms and legs. Within a few weeks of practicing Pilates, patients normally notice an increase in strength, stability, endurance and tone.
You may wish to continue your Pilates training as a fitness client when you are discharged from physical therapy. This will ensure continued good strength, alignment, toning, decreased stress, increased circulation and a feeling of well being. We offer classes and private sessions for our clients who would like to continue their practice.

Private Session:
One Session = $70.00
Sessions of 10 = $650.00
Semi-Private Session (2 people):
One Session = $40.00 per person per class
Sessions of 10 = $350.00 per person
We are a small, personal studio dedicated to quality instruction. We will attempt to place you in an appropriate class for your ability level. If that is not possible we will try to schedule you with one other person in a semi-private lesson.
Class (limited to 4 people per class):
One Day Pass = $24.00
One Month Pass (1 class per week) = $80.00
One Month Pass (2 classes per week) = $156.00
One Month Pass (3 classes per week) = $228.00
