ORTHOTICS

What are custom orthotics?

Custom made orthotics are medical devices that support and gently reposition the body, heel, arch, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones in the feet, enabling these structures to work together to make each step you take pain-free.

Good biomechanical alignment and function is important to help relieve and prevent some of the following common symptoms: lower back and hip pain, knee pain, shin splints, heel pain, plantar fascitis, achilles tendonitis, bunions, and other complaints often associated with improper foot biomechanics. At Sport and Spine Physical Therapy, we perform a comprehensive evaluation and casting for custom orthotics.

Custom made orthotics are built from plaster molds of your feet to meet your unique needs. They can be designed to fit in dress shoes, athletics shoes, boots, and skates.

Who needs custom orthotics?

Orthotics may be needed if there is excessive pronation (foot rolling in too soon), low or flat arches, or excessive supination (weight on the outside of the feet). orthotics have been found to be effective in relieving and preventing some of the following symptoms: lower back and hip pain, knee pain, shin splints, heel pain, plantar fascitis, Achilles tendonitis, bunions, and other complaints often associated with improper foot biomechanics.

Will orthotics help everyone?

Orthotics are most effective in alleviating problems and pain when they are used in conjunction with other treatments including joint mobilizations for stiff joints, strengthening, stretching, addressing muscle imbalance, and body mechanics instruction for walking and sport. orthotics help maintain good anatomical alignment. A thorough evaluation can determine if custom orthotics will be a helpful component in addressing your pain and pathology. Sometimes a "shelf" or noncustom, store bought arch support may be all that is needed to help.

How often should I replace my orthotics?

We recommend re-casting of orthotics if the shoe size changes 2 sizes, a weight change of 20 lbs or greater, or if a new injury warrants a change. The polypropelene shell has a lifetime warranty and top covers can be replaced.

What kinds of shoes will custom orthotics fit?

Custom orthotics can be made to fit in athletic, dress, or sport specific shoes such as cycling, soccer, ski boots, or figure skates. Dress shoes can vary greatly so often it is best to send the shoe or boot to the lab to be custom fit.

Can I get my orthotics from just anyone?

Trained professionals include Podiatrists, Ped-Orthodists, Physical Therapists, and Chiropractors. A good orthotic evaluation should include a thorough lower extremity biomechanical assessment with both weight bearing and non-weight bearing positions. The foot should also be analyzed during functional activities such as walking and/or running.
